Rajni Lal has grown both her career and her family under the orange banner of Gallagher finding her place in the New Zealand agribusiness industry.
Rajni is one of our all-star Customer Service Representatives. Originally from India, Rajni joined Gallagher 25 years ago when the iconic Gallagher building in Hamilton was just a carpark. Even back then the company’s family-first values were what impressed her most.
Rajni had trained at a medical student in India and started working in Hamilton’s Bendon factory before it closed. Her husband worked as a factory manager Gallagher, and he helped Rajni to find a new job.
“I remember soon after I started at Gallagher meeting Sir William. The first thing he said was I treat my staff as a family, and I have found that my whole career,” says Rajni.
Her children, son Ajay and daughter Rachel, are 21 and 25 now but she says the colour orange will always mean Gallagher to them. “When they were little, they would never say orange. They would see the colour and say, ‘look mum Gallagher!’.”
She believes the time they spent watching her work in roles across Gallagher from the factory floor to new product introduction, repairs and eventually customer service is what drove her children to pursue agribusiness careers as well. Her daughter now works at Halo Systems, a hardware and software company supporting farming systems. Her son is in the agricultural machinery business.
“They have grown up with Gallagher. I remember when they were little they used to sit in the cafeteria and wait for me after school. Gallagher has always been flexible in helping me work around my children,” says Rajni.
From her time starting on the factory floor doing PCB coating to her current role in the Customer Service Team, Rajni has seen a lot of changes in her 23 years with the company.
“The whole factory has changed in that time. When I started the current building was just a car park. The company has grown hugely along with our product lines,” says Rajni. She remembers that everything used to be done manually and staff had a clipboard that would move through with each product. Now everything is digital.
“I have also seen componentry and parts move from larger parts and components to microparts with a strong focus on cloud based and digital systems that didn’t even exist when I started,” says Rajni.
“We still get customers coming to us now with units that are obsolete and have reached the end of their life, but they loved the product so much they want to resurrect it. It speaks to the quality of products Gallagher is providing for New Zealand farmers,” says Rajni.
With her years of experience, she can direct these farmers to newer, more high-tech offerings and support them through implementing them into their farm systems.
Her role also crosses over into Tech Support where she can talk to customers about issues they are having and help them resolve them.
Rajni loves that her job comes with new challenges every day and relishes being able to help customers solve their issues and even improve on the products they are currently using.
“I’m so happy working here, I made the right choice 25 years ago. Gallagher is like a family to me.”
