eShepherd

Which virtual fencing option is right for your farm?

Choose from two options

eShepherd gives you two ways to fence virtually: direct to cellular, for quick setup in areas with basic coverage, and base stations for more remote country where cellular coverage is poor.

Direct to Cellular option

For most farms, eShepherd connects using basic cellular signal. Just 1–2 bars is usually enough. No base station means simpler setup and easier expansion.

  • Works with basic mobile coverage
  • No base station required
  • Faster, simpler deployment
  • Lower upfront cost
  • Scales easily across multiple blocks or properties

Base Station option

In more remote areas where mobile coverage is limited, base stations can be used. These connect via line-of-sight wireless technology (LoRa), ideal for rugged or isolated terrain.

  • Base Station provides coverage in mobile black spots
  • Uses long-range radio signal (LoRa)
  • One station can cover large areas, depending on line of sight

Which option is best for your farm?

The best option depends on your cellular coverage — but getting started is easy. Talk to us and we’ll guide you through the requirements.

  1. We’ll assess your property and recommend the best option: Direct to Cellular or Base Stations
  2. You choose whether to proceed
  3. Once your farm is mapped, we’ll deliver everything you need, ready to go
  4. Our team will guide you through fitting the neckbands, training the animals and getting set up and proficient on the app
  5. And whenever you need help, we’re just a call or message away, or check the Help section in the eShepherd app 24/7

How does it work?

eShepherd uses smart neckbands, virtual fences, and an easy-to-use app to give you full control of your cattle—without the wires or the walking.

1. GPS-enabled neckbands

Cattle wear GPS neckbands that track their location in real time
Each neckband is linked to the animal’s existing EID or VID tag for traceability
Individual animals appear as icons in the app
Group cattle into mobs or herds and colour-code them for easy identification and management

2. Virtual fences (digital boundaries)

Create and adjust fences using a simple map interface in the app
Load infrastructure such as physical fences, water sources, landmarks and hazards for full visability

3. Behavioral Cues

When cattle approach the virtual fence:
The neckband emits a sequence of audio cues (beeps) as a warning
If the animal continues and breaches the boundary, they get a mild pulse
Within about 10 days cattle learn to respond to the audio cues and stay within the boundary, avoiding the pulse

4. Remote monitoring and management

Use your phone or computer to manage your herd from anywhere.
Schedule moves into new paddocks
View grazing heat maps to optimise pasture use
Get alerts if an animal breaches a fence, stops moving, or if a neckband needs attention
