Gallagher HR0 recognised for design excellence at 2026 Australian Good Design Awards
Friday, 09 October, 2026

Gallagher Animal Management is a leading provider of Agtech solutions to Australia’s farmers and producers. This week, Gallagher has been recognised at the prestigious 2026 Australian Good Design Awards, with its HR0 Handheld EID Tag Reader receiving a Good Design Award in the Product Design – Commercial and Industrial category.
Designed and developed in New Zealand, the HR0 was recognised for its innovative approach to making electronic identification (EID) technology simpler, more accessible and affordable for farmers and livestock professionals worldwide.
On hearing the announcement, Mike Hemsley, BDM Animal Management Australia, said,
"The HR0 is a game changer for farmers and the wider industry. We're proud to represent innovation in rural Australia and continue to deliver high-performance EID reader solutions for livestock producers."
Established in 1958, the Australian Good Design Awards are Australia's longest-running international design awards, recognising excellence in design, innovation and impact. This year's Awards, presented under the theme Design that Leads, celebrate the role of design in addressing complex challenges, driving innovation and creating positive change.
Each entry is evaluated by an independent Jury of Australian and international design experts against three criteria: Good Design, Design Innovation and Design Impact.
In recognising the HR0, the Jury praised its purposeful design and ability to simplify livestock identification without compromising performance.
"The Jury recognises the Gallagher HR0 as a well-resolved and purposeful product that demonstrates the value of radical simplicity in industrial design."
The Jury also highlighted the HR0's triple feedback system, tip-mounted LED and automatic antenna tuning as examples of user-centred innovation, describing its combination of affordability and professional-grade capability as "a meaningful catalyst for broader EID adoption across the Australian livestock industry."
Making EID easy
Developed around a guiding principle of EID made easy, the HR0 responds to growing demand for accessible livestock identification technology as farmers navigate increasing traceability, compliance and productivity requirements.
While traditional EID readers can present barriers through cost and complexity, Gallagher set out to develop an entry-level solution that delivers professional-grade performance through intuitive, practical design.
The result is a lightweight, ergonomically balanced reader that enables users to power on and begin scanning immediately, with minimal setup or training.
Key innovations include enhanced read speed and range, automatic antenna tuning and multi-sensory feedback through sound, light and vibration. Bluetooth connectivity also enables seamless integration with smartphones, weigh scales and farm management systems, supporting accurate, real-time data capture.
Kris Fyfe, Gallagher Product Manager of Animal Performance and Traceability, says the award recognises the collaborative approach behind the product's development.
"The HR0 was designed around a simple outcome: making EID easy. Every element, from its ergonomic form and reliable performance to seamless connectivity, has been developed with the user in mind.
"Our teams brought together customer insight, industrial design, engineering, technology and manufacturing expertise to develop a solution that is practical, affordable and delivers real value for farmers.
“To see that work recognised internationally is a fantastic achievement and something everyone involved can be proud of.”
Designing for greater industry impact
Beyond its technical capabilities, the HR0 has been designed to help remove barriers to wider EID adoption, particularly as livestock industries transition towards increasingly connected, data-driven management practices.
By simplifying identification and reducing manual recordkeeping, the technology supports more accurate animal data, improved operational efficiency and better-informed management decisions.
Good Design Australia Managing Director Rachel Wye says this year's award winners demonstrate the broader value of design.
"Design is an important economic and social capability. It influences the products we create, the services we rely on, the policies we develop and the way organisations respond to complex problems."
For Gallagher, the recognition reinforces its commitment to customer-led innovation and developing practical technology that helps farmers manage their operations more efficiently, productively and profitably.
The 2026 Australian Good Design Awards will be celebrated at the official ceremony at the International Convention Centre in Sydney on Friday 9 October.
