A cost-effective, highly visible tape for safely containing horses behind shorter lengths of portable or semi-permanent fencing.
The ultra-white colour and 1½” width is highly visible to both people and animals, discouraging horses from engaging the fence.
1½” Poly Tape can also be used to construct electric tape gates.
1½” wide Poly Tape consists of 15 conductive stainless-steel strands to provide standard levels of conductivity with 2,400 Ohms/km of resistance*. To maintain enough power on fence lines longer than 656ft, Gallagher recommends using Turbo Tape for reliable animal control.
No wire tying or special tools required! Simplest option for end strain insulation; use at one end on shorter fence lengths.

Hobbits don't like sheep in their gardens. But how do you keep sheep out of a Hobbit's garden without using conventional fencing?
That was the problem faced by the Gallagher crew when asked to provide a fencing solution for the Hobbiton Movie Set near Matamata, New Zealand. Part of the Alexander family's sheep and beef farm, the set was a key location for the Lord Of The Rings and The Hobbit movies. The rebuilt set, complete with hobbit holes, gardens, an inn and café, is now a popular tourist attraction.
Russell Alexander, General Manager of Hobbiton Movie Set Tours, says a crucial stage of the rebuilding project was stock-proofing Hobbiton's boundary to prevent sheep on the farm from entering the site and damaging the landscaping. The rustic post and rail fences favored by Hobbits were far from sheep-proof, so a key challenge was to secure the boundary fencing while preserving the character of the site.
Russell says Gallagher was asked to design a fencing system that was effective yet visually subtle. It was far from a typical job for Gallagher Territory Manager Martin Kinney. He says the challenge was to incorporate a modern electric fencing solution that would completely blend in with the unique landscape on the film set. While measuring up the boundary he was conscious that treading damage to the long grass would be very noticeable. "I had to step very carefully so I didn't leave footsteps."
The fencing solution included attaching two hot wires to the rustic post and rail fence, with a third offset-mounted electric wire providing additional security. Gallagher was able to source camouflage-colored offsets that blended in with the timber fence.
Two Gallagher Energizers provided ample power to the fencing system which also features high tensile electric fence wire from Gallagher. Russell Alexander is pleased with the finished result. The fencing is completely cattle-proof and its visual appeal has been preserved. Gallagher has had a long association with the Alexander family and a significant amount of Gallagher technology is used on the farm.
"We use Gallagher products because Gallagher is a long-established and trusted company," says Russell. He says the fencing project on Hobbiton was a challenging task, "but we knew Gallagher would listen to us and understand what we wanted".
KANSAS CITY, MO - Electric fencing is taking another giant step forward with the launch of Gallagher's i Series Fence Energizer Systems in North America. Featuring advanced fence monitoring technology, the i Series Energizers are another world-first for Gallagher and highlight ongoing commitment to solve the daily challenges of producers.
"These Energizers deliver so much more information into the hands of the producer. It's like having six people out on your farm constantly measuring the current and voltage of your fence and reporting the information back to you," said Gallagher spokesperson Mark Harris.
Available in three models - M1200i, M1800i and M2800i - these new 110V Energizers are yet another example of Gallagher's technology that is both practical and innovative.
Each model comes with an Energizer Controller that enables the user to monitor the condition of the fence and performance of the Energizer. This controller can be used to turn the Energizer on or off, set alarm thresholds, and make adjustments to the target output voltage. The ability to locate the controller away from the Energizer – up to 160' away, is a major bonus.
Fence chargers are often hidden away in the back of a shed where they are not easily monitored and this can lead to uncertainty about whether saved pastures are safe or one stock class is being kept away from another. But a key advantage of an i Series Energizer is that the controller can be positioned in a separate more conveniently-accessed location where it is easy to view.
Incorporating high efficiency components that deliver outstanding performance and livestock control, i Series Fence Energizers make it easy for producers to find and fix faults quickly and efficiently. Fence monitors compatible with the M1800i and M2800i units can be placed in strategic locations along the fence line, dividing a fence system into zones to make it quicker and easier to locate a fence fault.
To improve functionality even further, i Series Energizers will soon have a large range of optional features, including an SMS Energizer Controller module that enables fence performance to be monitored and controlled from anywhere with cell coverage. This means if a serious problem with a fence is detected; the producer is notified immediately via a text message to their Smartphone.
The ability to control the M1800i & M2800i Energizer remotely with a Remote and Fault Finder means producers don't have to waste time returning to the Energizer to turn it on or off when they want to fix a fault. If you are at the back of your property fixing a fault, the last thing you want to do is drive all the way to the front of the farm just to turn the Energizer off.
The i Series Energizers will give producers peace of mind that their fences are being constantly monitored for optimal performance.
As well as ensuring consistent and high quality fence performance, the new Energizers will also have applications for property security. When connected to the optional alarm controller and SMS accessory products, if someone opens up an electrified gate or section of fence, the system will notify you straight away, even if you are away from your property. The i Series Energizers give producers confidence in the performance of their electric fencing systems.
Good electric fencing is critical to the successful operation of any operation, so the whole aim of i Series Fence Energizer Systems is to give producers the assurance that their fences are doing the job they were put there to do.

The quality of a horse farm is often only as good as the fences around it, and the Wilson sisters appreciate that fact more than most.
The sisters Vicki, Kelly and Amanda have had more than their share of horses injured after being caught in fences and gates, and spent many hours tending injured horses and putting the offending fencing right.
But in the past year they have had some welcome relief from the upsetting and stressful encounters between horses and fences, thanks to having their property made far more “horse friendly” using Gallagher Equine Fence systems.
Working with Gallagher and the Fencing Contractors Association of New Zealand the sisters have fenced well over two thirds of their Northland property with the Gallagher system that incorporates specially designed Equine Fence Wire, gates, outriggers and now the innovative new Insulated Line Posts.
With a year’s experience having the system in place, Kelly says they have come to realise how stressful and unnecessary horse injuries from fences and gates are when avoided by having a good system in place.
“In the 12 months we have had the system in place we have had no wire cuts or accidents from the fences or gates where we have the Gallagher system in place. But we have had seven on the remaining conventional fences, and one horse had to be retired from riding because of the injury she sustained.”
Other horses have also sustained small wire cuts requiring attention to avoid them becoming infected.
“I think what we have learned is that we now know it is preventable, they are accidents that with the right fencing, you can avoid.”
The sisters are working over coming months to replace the remaining traditional wire fences with Gallagher Equine Wire. The wire has a unique electrified polymer design with wide diameter and smooth coating that reduces the risk of it becoming entangled with a horse’s hoof, leg or head.
This has avoided the injuries Kelly has witnessed where the high tensile wire becomes entangled between the horse’s hoof and shoe, at worst electrocuting the animal.
Similarly, all the gates have been replaced with Gallagher Equimaster Gates, designed to minimise any risk of horses getting their heads or hooves caught in the gate’s railings.
Grid mesh welded to the gate frame eliminates the risk of mesh separating and providing a means for hooves to become caught between it and the frame.
“We have had horses go over gates and get their back legs caught, or get their heads caught between gate railings. We changed the gates over and in the past year have had none of those accidents.”
Kelly is particularly impressed with the newly released Gallagher Insulated Line Posts.
Designed to be easily transported around the farm, and set up with minimum fuss, their adjustability means they can provide a tailor made solution to containing horses, sheep, cattle and deer.
“We found they were extremely easy to set up, the three of us laid out a whole paddock ourselves in only about half an hour. The fact you can move the snap on clips up or down means to you can set up the fence and the wires exactly as you want them to be.”
The sisters have used the fence system to subdivide a larger paddock, and alongside the river bank to keep horses out of the water.
At present the sisters are running a wide variety of horses, ranging from three different breeds of wild horses, the horse Vicki trained and won in the World Championship of Colt Starting event in March, and a number of Olympic standard show jumpers.
Kelly said she has much more peace of mind knowing all are well contained, and less likely than ever to injure themselves around the family property.
“We have come to realise with the fence system just how avoidable some of these injuries are, and we are working hard to remove the last of the old fencing.”
Any horse owner’s worst nightmare is finding their trusted mount tangled in a fence, cut, bleeding or maybe even dead from an encounter with a fence that has proven far from suitable for keeping them safe and contained.
No-one is more familiar with the risk of injury than Vicki, Kelly and Amanda Wilson.
Well known for their work taming wild horses around the world, the sisters are New Zealand’s most prominent equine siblings and have gained a public following both in New Zealand and internationally. They also have an enviable show jumping record, claiming many wins at the sport’s highest levels.
Over the years, thousands of horses have been through the Wilson Sisters property in Northland during camps and clinics, as well as their own team of performance horses.
While accidents are few and far between, the sisters have seen and experienced first-hand far too many encounters with typical high tensile farm fences, as well as accidents in gates and from post and rail fencing. These have included legs caught in fences, wire cuts and scratches and catching hooves in gates. They are injuries often requiring weeks of intensive nursing to get right.
Thanks to their relationship with Gallagher, the sisters were given the opportunity to have their property re-fenced with Gallagher equine fencing systems, including Equine Fence Wire, insulators and gates all designed specifically with horse’s needs and challenges in mind.
“We did a lot of research on different fencing options before choosing the Gallagher Equine Fence Wire. It ticked all the boxes for us,” says Kelly.
Working with Gallagher and the Fencing Contractors Association of New Zealand, the sisters pulled out the old standard farm fencing around the property and commenced a fencing makeover that has exceeded their original expectations.
“We wouldn’t have considered our original fencing to be that bad, and thought it was pretty typical. Sure we had the occasional injuries but so does every horse owner. When Gallagher pointed out room for improvement, we saw huge potential to eliminate many of the issues we’d been struggling with over the years. Now we look back and see so many injuries that could have been prevented if we’d put safer fencing in earlier.”
The Gallagher Equine Fence Wire used is a unique electrified polymer design with a wide diameter and smooth coating, reducing the risk of the wire entangling the horse or becoming caught in them.
“Some of the worst accidents we’ve seen are when the wire (either on a fence or gate) gets caught between the hoof and shoe. It’s even worse when the wire is electrified and the horse can’t get loose.”
Since installing the Gallagher wire eight months ago they haven’t had any injuries in the newly fenced paddocks and couldn’t be happier.
With a huge storm in the region last month, followed by Guy Fawkes, the Wilson Sisters’ local vets tended to a number of fence related accidents. One equine property had three injured and one dead.
“Our horses came through just fine, not a scratch on them. It’s a huge relief being able to go to bed at night, or away to shows on the weekend, and know the horses will be in their paddocks when we return and safer than ever before.”
The makeover also included complete replacement of the property’s gates.
“We had never been able to find a gate that was truly horse friendly. We have had some bad experiences, including a horse getting a hoof caught in the acute angle of a diagonal brace, after pulling the gate off the hinges. The horse did a lot of damage to its hoof and shoulders which took a long time to recover. If we can reduce the risk of potential injury not only are we able to keep our horses safer and sounder, but we also save a huge amount in vet bills and the loss of value in horses no longer able to perform.”
With its solid steel grid pattern there is no risk of horses getting their feet caught and the Wilson sisters were relieved to see the end of the haphazard collection of gates they replaced. With the grid mesh welded to the gate frame there is also no risk of the mesh separating from the frame which again reduces the chance of hooves getting stuck.
The fence system comprises largely of outriggers to prevent horses talking to each other over the fence, which can be a major cause of injuries with horses previously striking out through the wire. Below this are one or two hot wires.
Since installation the integrity of the fence system has been pushed to its limits when tasked with containing the sisters’ wild horses they have been training.
“Before we changed to Gallagher there wasn’t a paddock we could keep them in, they would go under, through or over any of the fences we had.”
However with the new system the paddocks effectively have an invisible barrier that horses are respecting.
“The Equine Wire is highly visible compared to usual fencing wire. There is far less risk that they will canter into it.”
But it is not only the safety of their wild horses that gives peace of mind to the sisters. They have recently taken on some high value show jumping horses, ultimately intended for Olympic campaigns.
“Their owners need to know they are well looked after and safe, and the Gallagher fence system ensures that.”
The Wilsons have had a number of equine colleagues come to look over the fencing, and leave convinced it is the best they have seen for containing horses.
“As a horse owner, the most important thing is keeping our equine partners safe, since changing to Gallagher we’ve noticed the difference and only wish we’d changed sooner” says Vicki.
Rotokaia Farm’s new Gallagher i Series Fence Energizer is doing a great job protecting a valuable fodder beet crop from overgrazing.
Canterbury farmers Dave Jackways and Steve Booker, who manage the syndicate-owned farm, bought an M5800i Energizer in June this year to beef up their electric fencing system on a 230ha run-off between Rakaia and Ashburton.
This run-off is used for grazing young stock and for wintering many of the operation’s 1950 cows from the 750ha home farm near Dorie.
This year the run-off is growing 70ha of fodder beet for winter feed. While fodder beet can be expensive to grow, its high metabolisable energy content make it an ideal crop for wintering cows. But cows have to be gradually transitioned onto the crop through careful breakfeeding.
“We don’t want the cows getting too much too soon because that could be fatal,” Dave says.
This is where the new M5800i Energizer comes in. Dave says the M5800i is a very reliable unit that keeps electric fences hot. Packing 58 joules of energy, the M5800i is capable of powering fencing systems up to 240ha.
“We needed something with plenty of power, and the M5800i is just right for the job.”
Intelligent and highly functional, the M5800i comes with an Energizer Controller that can be positioned away from the main Energizer unit. This controller enables the farmer to monitor the condition of the fence and performance of the Energizer. It can also be used to turn the Energizer unit on or off, set alarm levels and make fine-tuning adjustments to the target output voltage.
Dave says their Energizer is mounted inside an irrigation pump shed and the Energizer Controller is mounted on the outside of this shed “where it’s easy to see when you are going past”.
Four Fence Monitors spread around the run-off recognise any drop in performance at their location and immediately relay this information to the Energizer Controller.
The M5800i was also supplied with an Energizer Remote and Fault Finder which enables the farmer to quickly locate faults, turn the Energizer on or off remotely, and test a fence once a repair is completed.
Dave says the remote saves a lot of time and effort when shifting temporary fences on pasture or crops.
“Most of our breaks are big, long faces, so if we come across a problem when moving the fence we can turn the power off using the remote, fix the problem, turn it back on again and then carry on.”
“It tells you exactly which part of the farm the fault is in and where it is, so you don’t have to trudge over the whole farm looking for it."
Rotokaia Farm also bought an optional SMS Energizer Controller unit that requests and receives fence performance information via SMS text messaging. This system notifies the farmer via mobile phone if there is any problem with the fence.
“Our cell coverage here is pretty dodgy but Gallagher are working on getting this up and running for us,” says Dave, “and it’s going to be very useful.”
The new M5800i is one of four Gallagher Energizers owned by Rotokaia Farms. Dave says the operation runs a range of Gallagher equipment, including a set of W810 weigh scales which are used for monthly young stock weighing.
KANSAS CITY, MO - Gallagher’s latest range of fence energizers has taken flexibility to a new level, giving producers three options when it comes to powering their units: 110v/plug-in, battery or battery/solar.
The MBS Multi Powered Energizer Range provides livestock control up to 90 miles / 520 acres, with models between 1 and 8 joules of stored energy. Each of the four energizers in the range opens opportunities to where livestock is controlled and what power source is used.
Gallagher developed the range after close consultation with ranchers and farmers about what they wanted in a truly flexible energizer. This included a need for greater power, reliability, portability and robustness in a single package. The power source flexibility of the MBS range means producers no longer need to mix and match energizers to applications.
The units can be installed as a permanent 110v-powered energizer delivering power to a defined area of the property. The energizers have incorporated a simple LED bar graph which clearly displays fence voltage performance.
Ranchers who have an unreliable 110v, plug-in power source also have the option of adding a 12V rechargeable battery to the unit with a battery back-up charger. The back-up charger, which is sold as an additional accessory, trickle charges the battery so that in the event of a power cut the battery kicks in to power the energizer providing peace of mind that your fence remains live.
The ability to power the MBS range with a battery also creates the option to use them for powering remote blocks or for strip grazing control where high power is needed. The battery operating mode uses a smart battery management algorithm to protect the battery from being over discharged and damaged, and its status is easily checked on the same LED bar graph that provides a battery performance indicator.
Adding a solar panel to the battery setup completes the power source trifecta, leaving no part of the ranch too remote to electrify. The easily installed solar kits come in 20, 40, 80 and 130 Watt options. Gallagher can advise the best energizer and solar kit combination depending on your location. The smart solar operating mode ensures that the energizer manages the batteries while maintaining the best stock control possible using the available solar energy.
The MBS energizers incorporate the design and build quality that has made Gallagher the market leader in the electric fencing, and first choice for North American ranchers and farmers over generations.
KANSAS CITY, MO -Producers wanting to fence pastures and valuable fodder crops in the toughest conditions can now reach for a heavy duty solution from Gallagher to get the job done.
After the runaway success of Gallagher’s Ring Top Post range that offered an easier to use, robust and lightweight alternative to traditional pig tail standards, farmers can now go to a heavy-duty option with the Heavy Duty Ring Top Post. The same heavy duty features have also been included in a Heavy Duty Multi Wire Ring Top Post, that will prove popular with livestock producers who are increasingly opting for fall and winter crop grazing.
It is the solution for temporary fencing ground that may be particularly stony or difficult to get a post into for other reasons such as soil type or moisture conditions.
In response to input from customers, the Gallagher design team rolled up their sleeves to work out how to make what was already an effective product even more robust.
Meantime they aimed to retain the light weight needed to deliver the portability a temporary fencing component has to have, as well as the patented head design that eliminates the risk of insulation failure common on standards made using traditional plastic tubing slid over the “pigtail” head.
“We knew we had a product that was very popular, the basic design has proven to be very sound. It involved beefing up the range by adding a Heavy Duty foot and a thicker steel shaft. Both mean they are much easier to “tread in” and stay in hard or stony ground than previous products on the market,” says Graham Johns, Gallagher product manager for fencing.
A steel shaft and a wider, heavier duty foot grating with dual foot spikes ensure superior ground holding for the new range. The robust construction makes it much less likely to bend or deform when pushed into the ground, helped by a foot plate capable of withstanding a massive 790 lbs of pressure.
Because they stay so well into the ground does not mean the Heavy Duty Ring Tops are harder to put in, or get out, of that ground. When it comes time to quickly pack up a temporary fencing project, producers will appreciate the Ring Top’s natural centered top creating a convenient handle for pulling them out of the ground.
Producers seeking the same features of durability also need multiple wires to contain stock, and the new Gallagher range has recognized this need.
The Multi Wire option comes with three insulators per post and the robust, short-proof glass filled insulators snap on easily, and are easily replaced if needed.
Wire heights and spacing allow multiple customized heights, with the flexibility of the Ring Top head for whenever single wire fencing is needed.
“Thanks to input from our valued customers, we believe we have come up with the ultimate stomp proof, tangle proof, wear proof solution to the most demanding of temporary fencing jobs, regardless of stock or crop type,” says Graham.
