Why use electric fencing for bear country?

Electric fencing is an easy to install, reliable, and psychological barrier that deters bears from entering your property, infrastructure or assets. An electric fence is a commonly used and successful tool in controlling bear access, away from danger. Unlike traditional fencing or barbed wire, an electric fence doesn’t cause physical harm to a bear. The electric pulse is designed to cause enough discomfort to train the bear not to engage with the fence again, thus preventing ongoing interactions with the fence line.

An electric fence is powered by an energizer. Sending electric pulses down the conductive wire, roughly every 1.3 seconds. The energizer is also connected to the earth via a ground rod. When a bear contacts the fence line, it completes circuit between the fence and ground, sending a pulse through the bear’s body. A good ground connection is crucial to a reliable electric fence.
