Tim Thompson checks in with Gallagher Landcare Grant recipients

Thursday, 02 February, 2023

In 2022, Gallagher proudly supported 17 sustainable agriculture and conversation-focused fencing projects across the country.

One of these recipients was Lisa and Eddy Dwyer. Their farm, Kangertong Farm, a 750-acre dairy farm, is located along the Hopkins River in the Purnim region of Western Victoria. They are using Gallagher Westonfence to regenerate parts of their farm benefitting the broader community, as well as supporting their business.

Recently, Tim Thompson had a chance to catch up with Lisa and Eddy to learn more about how the Gallagher Landcare Fencing Grant has helped them optimise the efficiency of their business and local area (and check out the beautiful view!).

He found that Kangertong Farm have been using innovative fencing products to rehabilitate the banks of the creek. In such a special and picturesque area of Australia, they want to regenerate the site; not just for the advantage of their lifestyles, but for the broader community that come to visit. The Hopkins Falls area is a popular tourist spot, and a part of the great Victorian bike ride.

Some of the issues leading up to Lisa and Eddy seeking support for their property included:

  • Cattle getting caught in the creeks and damaging trees
  • Damage in the waterways
  • A need to protect biodiversity in the region

In dairy farming, every square centimetre of grass matters. Investing in technology that protects the land is vital for business efficiency and sustainability. Not only that, but Lisa and Eddy’s farm supports rare native species, such as the Native Australian Olive tree.

Kangertong Farm implemented Gallagher Westonfence to solve the breadth of problems facing their farm and ensure ongoing protection of biodiversity and cattle. They were able to install the fencing quickly, and therefore make the most of the season, planting trees while the ground was still moist.

The Gallagher Westonfence is a permanent electric fencing solution that outperforms legacy fencing on every measure. It excludes feral animals such as wild pigs and kangaroos, while successfully and safely containing cattle, sheep, goats, horses, and other domestic animals.

After recent flooding in the region, where the water was well-above head-level, the Gallagher Westonfence “held up really beautifully”, and didn’t need any repair work.

“They’re well-designed fences…they’re solid, they’ll be there forever. And they’re keeping cows off the trees”.

“The support Gallagher provided was instrumental. They were a phone call away.”

We’re so proud to help support local Australian farmers like Lisa and Eddy in their conservation efforts. Applications for the Gallagher Landcare 2023 grants will be opening soon, so keep an eye out for further details!
