Make the most of eIDs when tagging lambs born this year
Wednesday, 25 June, 2025

You might be about to order your tags for lamb marking this year. Remember that lambs born this year must be identified with an eID tag before they leave your property.
Some states are offering eID tag discount programs to make adoption easier.
Make sure to take advantage of discount programs that may be in your state.
Since your lambs need to have eID tags, you’ll also need an eID tag reader to make sure you’re compliant, and to make managing your lambs easier.
An EID tag reader is a critical part of making the most of your livestock weighing system, enabling you to reap the maximum value from animal EID tags, beyond simple compliance.
Rather than making decisions based on herd averages, EID tags allow each animal to be treated as an individual – tracking each animals performance and offering insight to optimise their performance and your results.
The EID reader captures a unique tag number as an animal is weighed, treated or identified in a yard or race, recording data against that number for record keeping and data analysis. Gallagher offer both portable handheld, and permanent hands-free readers.
Handheld eID readers
Handheld EID tag readers are lightweight, rugged and easy to use - perfect for on the go use at different sites – animal data can be read, recorded, and collected anywhere on the farm. Handheld readers are just as viable as fixed EID readers for scanning animals, and can often give you more flexibility on when and where you scan.
HR5 v2 Handheld EID Tag Reader & Data Collector
Gallagher’s flagship Hand Held EID Tag Reader is the HR5. The HR5 is more than just a hand held eID tag reader, it’s a powerful portable data collection and editing platform, providing flexible data recording right there in the yard.
Farmers can record, edit and customise data against EID records immediately without needing to pre-define or set up a session in the office first.
HR4 v3 Handheld EID Tag Reader & Data Collector
The HR4 is perfect for pre-defined data recording and EID scanning. Prior to starting a session, farmers can pre-define up to 3 traits to record against each animal such as sex, condition score, pregnancy status and more, linking that data to the EID tag number.
The HR4 is made for easy recording of pre-defined animal data against an animal EID tag number, either on the device or Bluetooth connectivity with a connected weigh scale.
Hands free, fixed EID readers
Hands-free EID tag readers are fixed in place, usually on a weighing crate or at a location in a race, for hands free, automated reading of EID tags. They comprise of an antenna panel and an electronic controller or TWR Weigh Scale.
Fixed EID readers are great when you’re performing work such as drenching, vaccinations, or drafting, or need to move a lot of stock through a yard.
EID Tag Reader Controller BR
Ideal for fixed, hands-free EID data collection on any tagged livestock. The BR Tag Reader Controller has built-in Bluetooth connectivity, sending EID numbers to a connected EID enabled weigh Scale or recording up to 20,000 tags with its internal memory.
TWR Tag Reader Antenna Panel 600
Designed specifically for reading EID tags with a TWR Weigh Scale. This fixed, hands-free antenna panel automatically scans EID tags as animals walk past or are being weighed in a crush or race. EID tag numbers are recorded within the connected TWR Weigh Scale.
Whatever your EID needs this lambing season, Gallagher can help you out with our range of EID weighing and scanning tools.
