9 Principles of Good Grazing

Basic tips to have a good grazing system in place.

9 Principles of Good Grazing

1. Distance to water 500-700 ft.
2. Squares are more desirable for grazing segments
3. All livestock need about 2.5% of their liveweight in dry matter per day (3.5 - 4% for lactating and finishing stock)
4. Recovery time (rest) depends on climate conditions and forages. When in doubt, “graze half and leave half”
5. Plan rotation for the last pasture (get to the last pasture before it is overgrown and less palatable)
6. No more than 5 days in the paddock on the same grass
7. Fence with the terrain. Go with the terrace rather than up and down steep grades
8. Begin designing with perimeter, then areas to be excluded, then distance to water, create laneway, and temporary paddocks
9. Number of paddock are dependent on your goals and time commitment. 30 paddocks is generally considered ideal.
