Electric Fence Systems
An electric fence is a psychological barrier that keeps livestock in and predators out - even over long distances.
A pulse of electric current is sent along the fence wire, about one pulse per second, from an energizer (a.k.a. fence charger or fencer) which is grounded. When an animal touches the fence, it completes the circuit between the fence and the ground receiving a short, sharp but safe shock.
Because the fence is a psychological barrier, it does not require great physical strength. However, it must be well designed and constructed to absorb some pressure from animals, snow and wind. The energizer must have enough power for the length of the fence and for the animals being controlled. Use the Energizer and Fence Selector tools below to get started.
Overview of Fence Set-ups & Associated Components
Electric fence systems install quickly with minimal tools, saving on labor whether you install yourself or hire out a professional fence contractor. The savings can be significant when compared to other fencing options like barbed wire, woven wire, wood rail or vinyl fencing.
High tensile wire systems create long life, permanent electric fences. They are easy to install and operate and provide highly effective animal control.
Offset electric fencing is an economical and easy install option if you have an existing or new conventional, non-electric fence that you want to protect.
Portable electric fences are easy to transport, assemble and take down allowing flexible fencing for short-term animal control or rotational grazing.
